CPEC and Career Prospects for Civil Engineers in Pakistan

China–Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) is an economic corridor that is under construction in Pakistan. The estimated cost of CPEC is around $54 billion. The main purpose of this project is to connect Gwadar Port with Xinjiang in far-western China. This project opened up the door of employment in Pakistan and it is considered to play a major factor in the progress of Pakistan.
The bilateral alliance of Pakistan and China with CPEC is an economically driven based decision. Both countries have a history of standing with each other through thick and thin and now CPEC is another milestone that elaborates this fact. With mutual benefits and positive outcome; CPEC is considered a big game-changing collaboration.
 CPEC’s main objectives are:
      (1) Infrastructure projects (network of highways, railways etc.)
      (2) Energy projects
      (3) Creating new economic zones
      (4) Stability and prosperity for both countries
It would be impossible to think of completing CPEC without Civil Engineers. The economic corridor comprises of:

  • 1,100 Kilometer Motorway between Lahore and Karachi
  • Reconstruction of Karakoram Highway between Rawalpindi and Chinese border
  • Upgrading the Karachi-Peshawar railway line that would ultimately be connected China's Southern Xinjiang Railway in Kashgar
  • Energy infrastructure worth $33 billion to be fashioned

·     Network of pipelines to be laid for the purpose of transporting liquefied natural gas and oil
All the above-mentioned points highlight one major point “Construction” and since civil engineers specializes in the work of construction; they have an integral role to play. All these infrastructure projects would require qualified civil engineers from all over Pakistan and thus creating enormous employment opportunities for not only civil engineers but also for the people of other professions.
CAREER PROSPECTS FOR BS CIVIL ENGINEERS
It is estimated that CPEC would benefit both Pakistan and China in terms of progress, stability and create job opportunities for millions of people from both countries. It is predicted that 2.3 million jobs will be created from 2015-2030 and thus it will increase 2 to 2.5% points to the annual growth of thecountry. BS Civil engineers will have a major role to play in CPEC.
The job opportunities that will be there to grab for Civil engineers would in the positions like:

(2) Transportation engineers
  (3)Wastewater engineers
(4) Canal engineers
(5) Hydraulic engineers                                          
(6) Environmental engineers
(7) Geotechnical engineers

Civil engineers can apply for the positions of the project director, Project Planning, Monitoring and Evaluation. Apart from creating stability and gain momentum in the right direction, CPEC will help in getting the bar down of unemployment. The impact of it will be hugely in favor of Pakistan.

It is quite evident that the role of civil engineers will be huge in China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) and there will be career prospects for BS Civil Engineers in Pakistan. The demand for civil engineers is there in the world and with the introduction of CPEC, it is planned to give employment to qualified and professional civil engineers from all Over Pakistan.
It is expected that CPEC will change the fortunes of Pakistan as it will assist in economic growth increasing to 7% by 2018 and growing the export of the country to 4.5% a year till 2025. So, the impacts are anticipated to be great and it is a massive positive sign for Civil Engineers in Pakistan as they are going to play an important role in CPEC and it is obvious that there worth will increase in progressive times like today.
